Pine cones, half pine cones, and pine cone boxes

A SICILIAN GOOD LUCK CHARM

The pine cone has always represented a symbol of luck and prosperity in Sicily. It is often found at the sides of the gates of ancient villas and in noble gardens, but also on the facades of palaces and convents.

It has an esoteric meaning that dates back to the dawn of time, representing the highest degree of spiritual enlightenment.

In botany, the pine cone is known as a strobilus and is the fragrant inflorescence of conifers, rich in essential oils and sought after for the production of exquisite pine nuts.

My emotion:

One of my favorite scents is that which emanates from the pine trees, especially at sunset here in Sicily, and I have always enjoyed collecting the fallen pine cones from their branches, in search of the pine nuts. Then I would think of my grandmother's stories, who told me how the newlywed couple's bedroom was once decorated with these fruits, to wish fertility and abundance, but also because they were the symbol of eternity and the immortality of love.

Even now, giving a pine cone is a symbol of good luck.
